Every year, thousands of schools across the UK prepare for one of the most demanding periods in the academic calendar. Exam season. Timetables are carefully planned, invigilators allocated and classrooms transformed into assessment spaces. Yet despite all that preparation, one element of the listening exam often receives far less attention than it deserves.

The audio.

A listening exam is unlike almost every other assessment. Students aren’t simply reading questions or writing answers. They’re relying on hearing every word, every pause and every detail of an audio recording before demonstrating their understanding.

“We don’t want the same thing as last year.”

It’s probably the most common phrase every office manager, HR professional and event organiser hears as Christmas approaches. The challenge, of course, is deciding what different actually looks like. For decades, the corporate Christmas party followed a familiar formula. A hotel ballroom. A three course meal. A DJ. A dancefloor that slowly filled as the evening progressed. It worked, until it didn’t.

For years, success in the festival industry was measured by one thing, attendance.

Bigger crowds. More stages. More artists. Larger sites. The assumption was simple. If a festival was growing, it must be succeeding. Today, organisers are asking a different question. “How do we create a better experience for every person who walks through the gates?”

Awards are not the reason we do what we do, but recognition from the events industry is a valuable reflection of the work happening behind the scenes.

Through our sister company, Silent Seminars, we've been recognised by leading industry organisations including the Event Technology Awards, International Confex and ESSA.

Together, the two businesses share a belief that wireless audio should do more than simply deliver sound. It should give organisers greater flexibility and audiences more choice in how they experience an event.

Let’s start with a simple answer to this simple question – a silent disco is a musical event where partygoers listen to music on headphones rather than through loudspeakers that fill the whole venue with noise – circumventing any noise pollution restrictions and curfews. From the many people we’ve spoken to over our years of operating silent discos, we know all too well that at first, the concept may seem a little unconventional.

Noise – it’s a powerful indicator your event is running well. When I was actively running a tradeshow business, studies for retail spaces showed that music can impact how crowds move. The intuition of many organises that an event needs a certain level of buzz may have some science behind it.
